Display the shuffled sentences one at a time.

  2. 2

Pupils rearrange the words on mini-whiteboards.

Ask a pupil to justify the position of one word.

  4. 4

Reveal the original and compare sentence openings.

Teaching notes

Ask pupils to explain why a word cannot go in a particular place — that is where the grammar learning happens. The sentences deliberately share vocabulary, so pupils cannot rely on topic knowledge to guess the order.

Jumbled sentences: sentence structure FAQ

Does it keep capital letters and full stops?

Punctuation is kept attached to its word, and you can switch to a mode that adjusts capitals automatically.

Can I use it for translation practice?

Yes. Paste a target-language sentence and pupils rebuild the word order, which makes it a strong MFL starter.

How many sentences can it handle?

Paste a whole passage — each sentence is shuffled separately.
